When to Refer to Dr Adith
Dr Adith Venugopal is a Dental Council of New Zealand–registered specialist orthodontist, Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago, and author of over 130 peer-reviewed publications. He accepts referrals from general dentists, periodontists, oral surgeons, and restorative specialists across Auckland and New Zealand. The following are the most common and appropriate reasons to refer.

Complex Diagnosis
When a patient presents with a malocclusion that is unclear in origin, multi-factorial, or beyond straightforward classification, Dr Adith provides a comprehensive specialist diagnosis — including skeletal, dental, and soft-tissue assessment — with a written report returned to your practice. This is appropriate for patients with significant crowding, skeletal discrepancies, asymmetry, or cases where the treatment pathway is genuinely uncertain.

TAD Biomechanics
Cases requiring skeletal anchorage — open bite correction, molar intrusion for gummy smile management, Class II or III camouflage, anchorage-sensitive space closure — are a core clinical and research focus for Dr Adith. He is one of the most published researchers in TAD-based orthodontics internationally and teaches this discipline globally. Patients who would otherwise be referred for orthognathic surgery are frequently managed non-surgically using TAD mechanics.

Clear Aligner Suitability Assessment
Not every patient requesting Invisalign is a suitable candidate, and not every practice has the clinical framework to make that assessment objectively. Dr Adith provides an independent suitability assessment — evaluating whether the case can be adequately managed with aligners, whether a hybrid approach is indicated, or whether fixed appliances will produce a more stable result. The assessment is provided in writing and returned to your practice.

Interdisciplinary Planning
Cases involving implant-site development, pre-prosthetic orthodontics, periodontal co-treatment, orthognathic surgical planning, or restorative makeover sequencing benefit from early specialist orthodontic input. Dr Adith works collaboratively with referring specialists and general dentists to establish a coordinated treatment sequence before any irreversible treatment begins, ensuring the orthodontic phase optimises the final restorative or surgical outcome.

CBCT-Informed Assessment When Clinically Indicated
For patients with impacted teeth, root resorption concerns, airway considerations, or complex skeletal presentations, three-dimensional assessment can be clinically warranted. Dr Adith orders and interprets CBCT imaging when there is a specific clinical indication — not routinely — and integrates that information into the diagnostic report and treatment plan. The decision to image is always clinically justified and documented.

Written Report Back to Your Practice
Every patient referred to Parnell Orthodontics receives a formal specialist assessment, and a written report is returned to the referring practice. The report includes the diagnosis, treatment options considered, the recommended treatment plan with rationale, expected duration, and any interdisciplinary requirements. We treat your referral as a professional communication and respond accordingly.
