Braces remain one of the most versatile and effective orthodontic treatment options available. When planned and managed by a Registered Specialist Orthodontist, they can treat a wide range of straightforward and complex problems with a high degree of precision, control, and predictability.
At Parnell Orthodontics, braces are not a default or fallback option. They are recommended when they are the most appropriate tool for your individual needs, and every case is planned with careful attention to biomechanics, root positioning, facial balance, and long-term stability. Dr Adith’s approach is informed by extensive academic and clinical experience, including more than 130 peer-reviewed publications in orthodontics and biomechanics.
Although fixed braces are the original form of orthodontic treatment, modern systems are quite different from those of the past. Today’s orthodontic braces use smaller brackets, more refined materials, and gentler force systems to improve comfort, precision, and efficiency. Metal, resin, and ceramic options (when appropriate), can also make treatment more discreet, giving patients a reliable and highly effective way to straighten teeth and improve bite function.
What types of braces are available at Parnell Orthodontics?
We offer four types of fixed appliances, each suited to different clinical needs and patient preferences.
Modern metal braces
Modern metal braces use low-profile brackets and orthodontic wires to apply controlled forces over time. They are durable and give the orthodontist direct control over a wide range of tooth movements. Appointment frequency and overall treatment time depend on the individual treatment plan.
Metal self-ligating braces
Self-ligating brackets use a built-in clip rather than an elastic tie to hold the wire. This changes how the wire is engaged and may make some adjustments and cleaning more convenient. It does not guarantee faster treatment, fewer visits or less discomfort; outcomes depend primarily on diagnosis, biomechanics and patient factors.
Clear ceramic braces
Ceramic brackets are tooth-coloured or translucent and are less conspicuous than metal brackets. They can be suitable for selected adults and older teenagers, although material properties and case requirements may make metal brackets preferable in some situations.
Ceramic self-ligating braces
Ceramic self-ligating brackets combine a tooth-coloured bracket with a built-in clip. Dr Adith will explain whether this option provides the appearance and control required for your case.
Life with braces — what to expect
Getting braces fitted is painless. You may experience some tenderness for a few days after placement and following adjustment appointments as your teeth begin to move, which is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief if needed. We provide a comprehensive guide to eating, cleaning, and managing your braces at the start of treatment. Certain hard and sticky foods are best avoided during treatment, and a mouthguard is strongly recommended for contact sport. Most patients adapt quickly and find braces less intrusive than they expected.
After braces — retention
Long-term retention is required. Once your braces are removed, a thin wire is bonded behind your upper and lower front teeth, and a removable clear retainer is provided for night-time wear. Teeth will shift without retention — this is normal biology, not a sign of treatment failure — and patients who wear their retainers consistently maintain their results indefinitely.

Dr. Adith Venugopal
Dr Adith Venugopal is a Dental Council of New Zealand–registered specialist orthodontist and Senior Lecturer in Orthodontics at the University of Otago. He holds a PhD in Orthodontics, the qualification FDS RCS (England), MFDS RCPS (Glasgow), and membership of the Faculty of Dental Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications. Every braces case at Parnell Orthodontics is diagnosed and planned by Dr Adith.
