Teen Orthodontics

Orthodontics for Teenagers in Auckland

The teenage years are a common time to begin orthodontic treatment. By early adolescence, many permanent teeth have erupted and remaining growth may be useful for selected bite corrections. The best time to start is individual: beginning earlier does not automatically mean shorter treatment or a better result.

At Parnell Orthodontics, Dr Adith assesses dental development, jaw growth, the bite, oral health, treatment goals and the teenager’s likely cooperation before recommending when—or whether—to begin treatment.

What treatment options are available for teenagers?

We offer these types of treatments, each suited to different clinical needs and patient preferences.

Metal braces

Metal braces remain the most reliable option for the full range of teenage malocclusions. They are robust, highly controllable, and perform consistently across the broadest range of case types. Many teenagers embrace the colour options available with o-rings and take an active interest in customising the look of their braces throughout treatment.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are tooth-coloured and considerably less visible than metal alternatives. They offer the same clinical performance as metal braces and are a popular choice for teenagers who want a more discreet fixed appliance without compromising on results.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners — including Invisalign and Angel Aligner Pro — are increasingly popular with teenagers, particularly those involved in performing arts, photography-heavy activities, or contact sport where a removable appliance offers a practical advantage. Both systems offer features specifically designed for teen patients. Success with aligners requires wearing them for 20 to 22 hours per day, which is an honest conversation Dr Adith has with every teenage patient and their parents at consultation.

Sport, music, and normal teenage life

Braces do not stop teenagers from doing the things they love. Sports players wear orthodontic mouthguards — which we can provide — and continue competing throughout treatment. Musicians playing wind or brass instruments typically adapt within a few weeks. Clear aligner patients can simply remove their trays for activities where this makes sense. Treatment is designed to integrate into a teenager's life, not to define it.

What parents should know

Every teenager's treatment plan at Parnell Orthodontics is communicated clearly to both the patient and their parents. Treatment costs range from $8,900 to $14,900 with fully inclusive fixed-fee quotes and 0% interest-free payment plans available. The initial 30-minute specialist consultation is complimentary. Dr Adith personally assesses every patient and is available to answer questions from parents at any stage of treatment.
